WHY DO WE SAY IT? |
| A SANDWICH is, of course, just about the ultimate |
| convenience food. Like many words in the English |
| language "(eg cardigan), it was named after a person: |
| John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich was |
| en 18th century politician who was so addicted to |
| gambling that he had his servants bring him food |
| (initially ham) placed between two slices of bread so |
| that he could eat and gamble at the same time! |
| Incidentally, this was the same man after whom |
| Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands. |
