WHY DO WE SAY IT?

A SANDWICH is, of course, just about the ultimate
convenience food. Like many words in the English
language "(eg cardigan), it was named after a person:
John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich was
en 18th century politician who was so addicted to
gambling that he had his servants bring him food
(initially ham) placed between two slices of bread so
that he could eat and gamble at the same time!
Incidentally, this was the same man after whom
Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands.
