My favorite vacation

I had a wonderfully special vacation the summer before last, when

I spent a month in a town called Lulea in the north of Sweden the

land of the midnight sun. This was my second trip to Sweden,

but my first experience of the midnight sun, which can be seen

in the far north from the middle of May until the middle of July.

Imagine a sky that never fills with darkness, a sky bathed in

orange hues even after midnight, the culmination of every sunset

and sunrise I'd ever seen. It was delicious to emerge from a disco

into daylight at 1:30 A.M. or to stroll along a lake gazing at the

orange reflection of the sky in the middle of the night. I don't

know when I have felt so alive, and I will cherish the memory

always.
