Job seekers shape up to fight size prejudice

Job seekers shape up to fight size prejudice

ONLY perfect people needby Mark Austin
apply. Some employers are
rejecting qualified job appli-
cants because they are not the
ideal size. More than 100 job
seekers have been turned away
by leading employers, such as
the Automobile Association
and British Airways, some-
times without even being seen,
according to a Sunday Times
review of cases.
   Many applicants are taking
legal action intended to force
changes in the law because it
does not give specific protection
against size discrimination. Helen
Jackson, a barrister representing
more than 40 people seeking
redress for "size-ism
said last week: "The law needs
urgent revision to make it an
offence."
