by Ed Vulliamy New York THE LATEST idol of teen America - ‘Baby Bomber’ Danny Almonte, the Bronx baseball pitcher - has van- ished with his father, on the run from an investigation by child welfare authorities into his non-attendance at school for 18 months. The organisers of the Little League baseball world series at which Almonte captured America’s heart with dazzling play confirmed yesterday that the player’s father and team had lied about his age - saying he was 12 when he is 14, thus making him ineligi- ble to play. All the team’s vic- tories, through to a third- place play-off, were forfeited. The team - the Rolando Paulino All Stars - ‘used Danny and his team mates in a callous and despicable way’, said Stephan Falk, chief exec- utive of the Little League. |
