Coat to make the fur fly

Coat to the fur fly

The anti-fur brigade is hypocritical, says Birna Helgadottir
I HAVE a coat, which I inherited from my grandmother. It is old and tatty but extremely warm - shorn sheep-skin with a wild mink collar. Although it has been very cold recently, I have not worn it. Not because I consider it wicked or immoral, but because, despite its tattiness, I am rather fond of it. And I do not want it ruined by some passing anti-fur campaigner, who might reach into a suede coat or leather handbag, pull out an aerosol can, spray it with paint and then run away no doubt in calf-skin boots.
While there are legitimate arguments for not wearing animal skins, the only people who can put them forward with integrity are non- leather-wearing vegetarians. Meat-eaters have vet to come up with a convincing argument. There are certainly cruelties in fur-farming, which should be stopped, but they are matched by the horrors of meat-farming. At least fur is recyclable - granny was able to bequeath me her coat, not her lamb chops.
