From MrJonathan Elderton Sir: A recent incident at Almeria airport in Spain has made me wonder about the behavior of the British abroad , and whether the Maastricht treaty will ever work. I was queuing to be checked-in in a long package-tour holiday queue alongside an equally long queue full of Germans. Suddenly the Germans' check-in desk for which they were queuing was changed to the check-in desk on the other side of OUT queue. Same of the Germans tried to force their way through our baggage- laden queue to avoid walking to the back and around. On seeing this man-oeuvre, the British package-tour representative started shouting: "Don' t let them through, close up the spaces; we didn't win two world wars and one World Cup for nothing!" He was then applauded and cheered by sorne of my fellow holidaymakers. So much for European harmony, I thought. Yours faithfully, JONATHAN ÉLDERTON Cambridge |
