England's Wastelands

ENGLAND'S WASTELANDS

I have just returned to Britain after three years in Argentina. My biggest gripe about Buenos Aires was the filth polluting this lovely city. I couldn't believe the mindless way that litter, sewage and industrial effluent were chucked into the tea-coloured sea.
Underlying my anger was a rather smug belief that we British were much more enlightened and educated and would never blight our landscape so carelessly. Yet I find myself in Eastbourne, the Tourist Board's "resort of the year", unable to enjoy playing with my son on the beach because the dogs' mess, broken bottles, rusted jagged cans, old tyres and goodness knows what other pieces of rubbish have tumed a wonderful natural playground into an unpleasant, at worst dangerous, wasteland.
