De kwaliteit van de verbranding kan worden uitgedrukt in de giftigheidindex (GI). Daarbij wordt eerst het aantal gram koolstofmono-oxide en het aantal gram koolstofdioxide bepaald die bij de verbranding ontstaan. De GI kan daarna als volgt berekend worden:
GI = aantal gram koolstofmono-oxide / aantal gram koolstofdioxide × 100
Houtkachel A heeft een GI van 2,6
Houtkachel B heeft een GI van 6,6
