Meat gets a roasting

"CAN you irnagine being locked
in a classroom In semi-darkness,
unable to move from your desk,
turn around or even go to the
toilet for months on end?" That
isn't more propaganda from the
current Gerbil debate, but the
opening shot in a new schools
campaign, launched this week by
the Vegetarian Society, to
persuade pupils to become
vegetarian.
The School Campaign for
Reaction Against Meat - aptly
acronymed SCREAM - highlights
the cruelty animals and
poultry can suffer under factory
farming conditions. The thinking
is that while adults become
vegetarian for health reasons,
young people do so out of distaste
for factory farming. The
society's youth education officer
Juliet Gellatley says: "Children
care more about animals than
getting a heart condition when
they are 50."
SCREAM aims to reach half
the teenagers in the country via
adverts in teen and pop magazines.
It offers advice on
switching to a vegetarian diet
and campaigning against unacceptable
farming practices.
