Welke situatie deed zich voor toen Lane Kirkland in Warschau was?

Lane Kirkland, the president of
the AFL-CIO, the u.s. umbrella
labor organization, was in Warsaw
at the invitation of Solidarity to
witness the swearing in of Lech
Walesa as Poland's president on
Dec. 22. Sitting with the other
VIPs, Kirkland, who does not
speak Polish, was unable to hear his
interpreter because of all the noise.
Kirkland decided to watch everyone
else: when they applauded, he
applauded. At one pomt, the audienee
broke into lively applause and
Kirkland joined in. His interpreter
quiekly interrupted him with,"You
can't clap now, he's praising you."
